About Me

I’m Kat, the heart behind the magic of Broomstitch. Born and raised in Auckland, we recently moved cities and are now happily calling Wellington home.

By day, I work with for a small IT company and have a career in cybersecurity and by night I like to wind down with a craft project. Most recently knitting and crochet have been my therapy and a form of meditation. It’s one of the few things that makes me slow down, take a moment to breathe and connect with myself.

    • How Broomstitch Came To Be

I was taught to knit by Grandma and Mum when I was very young and taught myself to crochet after my daughter was born, picking up the needles again as well after a long hiatus.  I’d now consider myself an avid knitter, crocheter, and yarn enthusiast but I also enjoy patchwork quilting and sewing, dressmaking, cross stitch, embroidery, and burying my nose in a good fantasy novel. Learning about my ancestral heritage and those people’s ancient cultures and practices is another of my interests - so I decided to have a go at learning some Scottish Gaelic!

Broomstitch came about through my love of all things crafting. The joy of making something completely new from raw materials and a few simple tools truly feels like a form of witchery to me, as it seemed to baffle any onlookers. I found myself receiving constant requests for handmade items, with friends and family offering to pay me for my time. I decided I needed a vehicle to be able to sell my finished items, handmade notions, hand dyed yarns I used for my projects and maybe to eventually get around to publishing some patterns for things I’ve designed.

I love sharing any knowledge and experiences with fellow enthusiasts as well as beginners to get them started on their own crafty journey. I also love supporting this wonderful community of other indie dyers, crafters, artists, and designers.

I hope you have found something here to bring some magic into your day and your own crafting journey. If there’s anything you’d like to have a yarn about (sorry not sorry about the pun), please reach out via my contact form on the website or through my Instagram page – I’d love to hear from you!
